Tips on reducing plastic waste in the kitchen By Aadyaa Keyal

Everyday part of our life involves the use of  plastics. Particularly single use plastic. While eating out ,the tissues we use, tiny water bottles we pick up or our take out containers.  Even our groceries come in plastic . So without realising we create a lot of waste daily. One place where we can make a change is in our kitchen. If we change a few habits and implement this daily we can reduce the amount of plastic we create and contribute to a more sustainable future.  Let's read on to find out what a common person can do to reduce plastic waste in their kitchen!

  1. 1.Switch your plastic  to reusable:

First and foremost, one of the easiest ways to reduce plastic waste in the kitchen is to switch to reusable bags and containers. Instead of using plastic bags for grocery shopping, opt for reusable tote bags or mesh bags. For storing food, choose glass or stainless steel containers over plastic ones. Not only will this reduce waste, but it will also help to keep your food fresh for longer.

  1. 2.Don't use plastic bottles:

Another significant source of plastic waste in the kitchen is single-use water bottles. Instead of buying bottled water, invest in a refillable water bottle and fill it up at home. You can also install a water filter at home to ensure you have access to clean drinking water. This simple change can make a huge difference, with millions of plastic water bottles being discarded every day.

  1. 3.Avoid single-use plastics: Refuse single-use plastics like straws, cutlery, and bags. Don't buy paper towels or tissues either. This helps reduce your budget and waste created in your kitchen.

  1. 4.Choose products with minimal packaging:

One simple step is to avoid buying food wrapped in plastic. Opt for fresh fruits and vegetables instead of pre-packaged ones. You can also buy in bulk and store food in reusable containers. When shopping, choose products with minimal packaging or those that use biodegradable materials.

  1. 5.Try your hand at  Composting:

Composting is another great way to reduce waste in the kitchen. Instead of throwing away food scraps, start a compost bin or pile. This will help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden.

  1.  6.Use beeswax wraps or reusable bags: Store food in beeswax wraps or reusable bags instead of plastic wrap.

  1. 7.Label and date containers: Label and date containers to ensure you use the oldest items first and reduce food waste.

  1. 8.Freeze leftovers: Freeze leftovers in reusable containers or glass jars to reduce food waste and save time. Think of creative recipes to use them wisely or donate your food.

  1. 9.Choose eco-friendly cleaning products: Opt for eco-friendly cleaning products with minimal packaging. Try not to use paper towels that are only one time use:

  1. 10.Recycle and compost: Recycle and compost as much as possible, including food waste, paper, and cardboard.

In conclusion, it is important we enforce these simple steps in our daily lives now. So the next time you're in your kitchen, think twice before using a single-use plastic bag, tissue or container that has negative effects on your health and the earth.  Remember, you can cook delicious meals and store them while making eco friendly choices in your plastic free kitchen!
