How to host a Community Potluck

How to host about community potluck- Aadyaa Keyal

These days the regular restaurant outings are being swapped for potluck parties. Instead of being rushed on a weekend with a busy crowd and paying an expensive bill people are hosting community potluck! This is a fun, inexpensive way to meet up with friends or family and enjoy food. Let's see how one can host a community potluck by generating minimum to no waste and still enjoying it to the maximum .

Firstly,What is a Potluck?

A potluck is a communal meal where guests bring homemade dishes to share. Potlucks are popular because they are easy and affordable to host, and they encourage creativity and social interaction.

Tips to host about low waste potluck party:

  1. Make a list of all the dishes being brought

As simple as this sounds, make sure there is a clear list containing the names of guests and the food they're bringing to the table. This way no dish is repeated and the food doesn't go to waste.

  1. Specify the quantity

Inform guests prior to the day the amount of food they need to buy or prepare. They can shop for ingredients accordingly and make enough. This saves a lot of food from going to waste and their money.

  1. Don't use single use cutlery

Avoiding plastic items like spoons, forks, knives and tissues can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated at this event. Using steel cutlery, their own water/beverages bottle and handkerchiefs is an eco-friendly way to enjoy the delicious food.

  1. Bring your own reusable cups

Beverages can be enjoyed in a reusable bottle of their own. Metal straws look more  trendy as compared to one time use of plastic straws. Switching out plastic bottles for steel or metal ones is a sustainable switch.

  1. Label and return dishes

Labelling the food and storage containers will eliminate any potential confusion later on, making it easy for their rightful owners to find them. This is especially important for large groups that are bringing many types of dishes to the potluck. Labelling containers also ensures that the host or event planner won’t have to spend time at the end trying to wrangle guests into taking home their unlabeled Tupperware.

  1.  Package leftover food

Once your event is over, make sure that your guests package up their leftovers to either take home or donate to a good cause. Ask your participants to bring extra containers to your event if you plan to donate leftovers.

  1. Disposal Area

Set up an area with bins for compost, recycling, and a very small bin for trash (if needed).

Create and display clear signage so people can dispose of everything responsibly. Don't litter anywhere and compost whatever food scraps that you can.

  1. Share the excess food

In case you find yourself with tons of food ,donate it to a food bank, orphanage or an ngo. Sharing even a little of what you have is a kind deed. The food can be put toma good use at the end of the day.

So if you love hosting or attending potluck parties, then follow these tips. Even the smallest change can contribute significantly. Encourage others to keep these steps in mind and be proud to enjoy your party whilst creating less waste!
